For many high-achieving tech executives, the signs aren’t obvious. At least, not at first. You’ve checked all the boxes: the title, the compensation, the accolades. But something’s shifted. That rush of fulfillment you once felt? Gone. Quietly replaced by restlessness, disconnection, or even dread.

Welcome to The Executive Pit ™.

This invisible moment—when outward success no longer equals inner satisfaction—is more common than you think. And it marks the beginning of a powerful career transformation.

What Is The Executive Pit™?

The Executive Pit ™ is a metaphor and proven coaching framework developed by executive coach Lori Howard. It describes the disorienting stage many executives face when they outgrow the career identities they’ve built.

It’s the professional equivalent of an existential reckoning:

  • “Is this all there is?”
  • “What do I really want now?”
  • “How do I make a change without losing everything I’ve worked for?”

This stage is hard to name, but once you recognize it, you’ll realize you’re not alone. And you’re not stuck. There’s a path forward.

My Story: From Crisis to Clarity

I didn’t just create this framework. I lived it.

In 2006, I hit what I now call “The Pit”: burned out, unfulfilled, and unsure how to reinvent myself after climbing the ladder of success.

I had spent 15 years in tech leadership, driving results, leading teams, and solving complex problems. From the outside, it looked like I’d made it. Inside? I was disconnected from the work, the impact, and myself.

The moment I left my VP role at a financial research firm, I knew I couldn’t just “find another job.” I needed a new way to be in my career—one that aligned with who I truly was, not just what I could do.

So I took apart the career I had built.

I studied transformation through coaching, neuroscience, and leadership psychology. I trained as a Certified Executive Coach and Career Strategist, and eventually developed a process that combined my analytical background with deep emotional intelligence. What started as survival became clarity. What felt like failure became a foundation.

That experience became the blueprint for the journey I now guide others through:
Tech leaders who are ready for what’s next but are not willing to settle for less alignment, less power, or less meaning.

I don’t teach theory. I walk people through what I’ve lived.

Because I know what it takes to reclaim your voice, your value, and your direction, especially after success has stopped feeling successful.

Today, I am a master strategist for executives in transition, and The Executive Pit ™ is the roadmap out.

The Real Challenge: External Success vs. Internal Alignment

At the executive level, career transitions aren’t just about finding the next role. They’re about rediscovering who you are, what you want, and how to align your work with your values and legacy.

The Pit isn’t failure—it’s the call to evolve. But you can’t navigate it with the same tools that got you here. You’ll need a map.

The 8-Phase Journey Out of the Pit

Here’s a glimpse at the full transformation—a map for tech executives ready to rise with purpose:

  1. ⚡ The Call to Change
That restless inner voice? It’s not a problem—it’s a signal. This phase marks the beginning, where discontent becomes the catalyst for something more.
  2. 🌿 Edge of the Pit
You’re still functioning at a high level, but your clarity is beginning to fade. This is where you start to question what’s next and begin seeking honest answers.
  3. 🌀 Descent
Doubts creep in. Your confidence wavers. You may feel invisible or uncertain about how to discuss who you are now. It’s time to rework your brand and resume from the inside out.
  4. 🐉 Pit of Trials
You begin to show up, but the world doesn’t always respond the way you hoped. This is the phase of awkward outreach, rejection, and learning to navigate visibility with resilience.
  5. 🔥 Dragon’s Lair
Interviews and negotiations become a crucible. Old fears resurface. This is where you confront your worth, your power, and your fears of being “too much” or “not enough.”
  6. 🛤️ Climb Out
The pieces start to click. Your strategy sharpens, momentum builds, and you begin executing a search aligned with who you are now, not who you used to be.
  7. 🌅 Re-Emergence
You’ve landed. Now what? This is where you step into your new role with intentionality, shaping your impact from day one.
  8. 🌟 Return with Power
The journey transforms you. You return to your career—and your life—with a clear voice, renewed values, and a legacy worth building.

Each of these phases holds challenges and breakthroughs. In the coming weeks, we’ll explore what each one looks like and how to move through it with clarity and power.
